A Long-distance connected reader refers to a device with the capability to be connected to the host by significantly long cables.
Some projects may require the devices to be placed at a significant distance from the host/PC/server, etc. For these cases, we recommend using the Base HD device. These devices can be connected on a total distance of 1.5 km of standard UTP cable Cat5e or higher. They use USB to RS485 and vice versa signal conversion, transparent to the end-user.
For the configurations closer than 320 meters, the additional power is not necessary. One device can be powered using just a USB from its host.
For longer distances, the additional power supply is a must, due to voltage drop on long cable runs.
