Troubleshooting: “FTD2XX.dll is missing” Error on Windows 10 & 11 #
When launching uFR Software or uFR tools on a Windows 10 or Windows 11 platform, you may encounter a system error prompt that prevents the application from starting. This guide provides a verified manual fix for this driver recognition issue.
The Problem #
Immediately upon starting the software, the following error message appears:
“The program can’t start because FTD2XX.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem.”
This occurs even when the FTDI drivers are correctly installed, as the system sometimes fails to properly map the library files in 64-bit environments.
The Solution: Manual File Reconfiguration #
To fix this, you must manually move and rename the driver library file. Please ensure you have Administrator privileges before proceeding.
Step 1: Remove the invalid entry #
-
Open File Explorer and go to
C:\Windows\System32. -
Find the file named ftd2xx.dll.
-
Delete this file.
Step 2: Locate the 64-bit driver #
-
Navigate to the folder:
C:\Windows\SysWOW64. -
Find the file named FTD2xx64.dll.
-
Right-click it and select Copy.
Step 3: Relocate and Rename #
-
Navigate back to the
C:\Windows\System32folder. -
Paste the file (FTD2xx64.dll) into this folder.
-
Right-click the file you just pasted and select Rename.
-
Change the name from
FTD2xx64.dlltoFTD2xx.dll
Verification #
Close all folders and attempt to run your uFR software again. The program should now launch immediately without the error prompt.
